About the Role 

This role plays a critical part in improving resident safety, dignity and quality of life, while supporting clinical risk management, staff education and quality improvement aligned with the Aged Care Quality Standards.

Reporting to the Head of Residential Aged Care, you will deliver expert speech pathology services with an emphasis on dysphagia management, IDDSI implementation, informed decision making and dignity of risk. The role includes both clinical practice and education delivery, primarily via telehealth, with targeted on-site support where risk or operational needs require.

Key Responsibilities:  

  • Assess and manage swallowing, communication and voice needs, with a primary focus on dysphagia
  • Develop, implement and review individualised mealtime management plans aligned with IDDSI
  • Provide expert advice on choking risk, aspiration risk and complex dysphagia management
  • Support informed choice and dignity of risk decision making with residents, families and staff
  • Design and deliver education programs to improve staff capability and safe mealtime practices
  • Contribute to incident reviews, clinical governance, audits and quality improvement activities

 

About You 

Essential:

  • Recognised tertiary qualification in Speech Pathology

  • Current membership with Speech Pathology Australia

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience working with adults with dysphagia and communication disorders

  • Strong knowledge of IDDSI, dysphagia management and mealtime risk in aged care

  • Understanding of the Aged Care Quality Standards and clinical governance requirements

  • Excellent communication skills, including discussing clinical risk and management options

  • Ability to deliver education via telehealth

  • Current National Police Check (or ability to obtain)

Desirable:

  • Experience in residential aged care

  • Experience in education delivery, quality improvement or accreditation processes
